Creating Scented Pine Cones

Creating your own scented pine cones are a great way to decorate your Christmas tree or create a perfect tablescape all on a dime! This DIY is sure to appeal to your guests and create the holiday season within your home

Collect, Collect, Collect

Before you can create scented pine cones you need pine cones! If you do not have access to a pine tree in your yard, consider family members, neighbors, or public areas to collect pine cones. When collecting pine cones it is important to choose pine cones all with similar size and no clear damage.

Bake Pine Cones

Baking pine cones you ask. When you bake your pine cones you kill off any little bugs that have been living inside. After placing your pine cones on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil, heat your oven to 200-250 degrees and place in the oven for 30-45 minutes. If you would like to wash your pine cones before placing them in an oven be aware that pine cones will close when they are wet and open when they are dried.

Prepare Scent

While your pine cones are baking start preparing the scent in a small spray bottle. Add about ½ a cup of water in the spray battle with 15-20 drops of essential oil. Consider utilizing a scent reflecting of the holiday, such as cinnamon or peppermint.

Once the pine cones are ready to come out of the oven, decide if you will want to spray paint or dip your pine cones in fake snow. If so, do this first before lightly spraying all your pine cones in essential oil.

Let it Sit

You can decide to place your pine cones out immediately if you are short on time or you can place all pine cones in Ziploc bags to allow them to sit for 2-4 days. Keeping the pine cones in Ziploc bags will help intensify the scent.

Display Time

Now it is time to place them throughout your home. Consider places where you may have a lot of foot traffic, like the entrance of your home or living room. You can also use them as apart of your holiday décor on your Christmas tree, apart of your dining table decor, or in a nice basket placed on a coffee table. Remember, as you are decorating, if the scent starts to fade away, you can always respray as needed.

There you go!! A quick DIY to spruce up your home this holiday season.
